Our second stop with our new (to us) Bighorn 3875FB was a night at Lake City Campground in Lake City Florida.
Here we were just looking for an easily accessible place to spend a single night. We tried to break our return trip (from Florida to Alabama) down into reasonable chunks of about 250 miles, and that put our first stop around Lake City Florida.
Using the Good Sam app and Campendium website we found the Lake City Campground and also the Lake City RV Resort. The price difference was only about $4, and it looked like the reviews were pretty close. The “resort” was located right next to the highway and some of the reviews complained of the road noise, so we opted for the quiet of the campground.
After having such a wonderful experience at Seminole Campground, we had high hopes, but also expected very little. Reality was closer to our expectations and Lake City Campground was on-par with what we expected RV campgrounds to be like, based on what little interactions we’d had prior to this trip.
The campground appeared spacious and had lots of trees to provide shade. There was a pool and a small playground right near the entrance to the park. When we arrived, Julie headed into the office to check us in, to find the office/camp store filled with an assortment of odds and ends.
While the camp office smelled strongly of sewage, we were thankful that wasn’t the case on the campground itself. We were checked into site 4, which was located right next to the camp office (and bathrooms). Oddly, there was a sign there that the spot was reserved for rigs 70′ and longer (we’re big but we aren’t that big).
I’d say this made it easy for us to get into the site as newbie drivers, but it did not. Unfortunately, we’d pulled up just slightly too far and someone else had pulled in behind us while Julie was inside. So, parking required a trip around the office and back to the entrance. From there, setup was easy, and we had no issues.
There were several residents on the far side of the office, and a few parked near us, and for the most part it felt like they were there for the long-haul. Including one person living in a tent, with all manner of things surrounding it. It felt a little sketchy, and we were actually a bit glad we were only staying one night.
The next morning before we left, Julie took a walk around to check out the place a little more. In the process, she found the duck pond – there were actually ducks hanging out, checked out the bathroom – very old, but clean, and found the rec room – which included a couple of video games and a wired internet connection.
It wasn’t a bad place, but it wasn’t a great place. We probably would stay here again if we were passing through and just needed one night, but we’d check for other options first. And, we wouldn’t stay longer.
